It forms part of the School of Geological Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and it consists of rock, mineral and fossil collections.

The Port Elizabeth Museum at Bayworld is the third oldest museum in South Africa. It was granted to the Municipality for the erection of a Town Hall, municipal offices and Athenaeum.

Albany museum is the second oldest museum in South Africa. It is a regional museum founded by the Culture of the Eastern Cape government. There are a number of Research Departments lodging permanent collections of terrestrial insects, freshwater invertebrates, paleontological fossils, rocks and archaeological material.

It's a part of the School of Geosciences in the Faculty of Science of the University of the Witwatersrand. Its mission is to collect, conserve and interpret the rich fossil heritage.

The museum was originally buried away in a tiny room next to the clock tower on the top floor of Parliament House.

Its one of the better known natural history museums in the southern hemisphere. It comprises the mammal collection of more than 75 000 specimens.
